幕末会津藩主の手紙公開 戊辰戦争当を知る一級資料

幕末の会津藩主で京都守護職などを務めた松平容保（まつだいら・かたもり）が、京都から国元の家老らに、幕府の要職「軍事総裁職」を引き受けるしかない理由を記した書状を福島県が入手し、１８日、報道関係者に公開した。

　県立博物館（会津若松市）の若林繁（わかばやし・しげる）主任専門学芸員は「藩の窮乏から、容保の京都残留に反対する勢力に説明をした書簡と考えられる。戊辰戦争で敗れた会津藩には残された文書が少なく、当時の動きを説明する一級の史料」としている。

　佐藤栄佐久（さとう・えいさく）知事が同県郡山市の古書店のカタログに掲載されているのを見つけ、県立博物館が昨年末、約５０万円で購入したという。

　書状は１８６４年２月１８日付で、幅約１６センチ、長さ約５２０センチ。容保の発言を書記係が書き取ったとみられる。

　書状は就任について「領内も私も困窮し苦心千万だが、朝廷から厚いご信頼をいただき、幕府からも命令を受け、辞退するのは道理に合わない。徳川家長久の道を探った場合、藩として死力を尽くすほかはない」などと説明、藩に厳しい倹約を求めている。

　書状は４月から福島市の知事公館で公開（予約制）、９月３０日から県立博物館の企画展で展示される予定。（共同）
